A Door at Princeton University
We believe that this photo is part of a dormitory. Over 95 percent of Princeton students live on campus in dormitories, a far cry from many schools where insufficient dormitories mean that students must live off campus. As you can tell, the building is far from new. Princeton, founded in 1746, is the fourth oldest institute of higher education in the United States of America, following Harvard University, the College of William and Mary, and Yale University. Princeton was originally founded in 1746 in Elizabeth, New Jersey, and was called the College of New Jersey. Moving to Princeton in 1756, the school was renamed Princeton University in 1896. Princeton University did not have an official religious affiliation, differing from most universities of that time.
Nassau Hall was the first Princeton building constructed but the American Revolution was not kind to the building as it was bombarded by cannons. Princeton was occupied by both British and American forces during the war and college buildings were heavily damaged. General George Washington and his troops won the Battle of Princeton, fought not far from Nassau Hall. Nassau Hall is also known for the Continental Congress meeting there during the summer of 1783, when Princeton was the country's capital for four months. The building we see today is a different one due to fires in the early 19th century.
Princeton has a long and proud history of graduates and people affiliated with the school, including presidents from the United States of America and around the world such as John F Kennedy and Syngman Rhee of Korea, other heads of state such as Queen Noor of Jordan, and Michelle Obama.
