Sather Tower
At UC Berkeley, Sather Tower is more commonly called The Campanile. Campanile is the Italian word for bell tower. In Italian, campanile refers to bell towers that are either part of a larger building or free-standing, but in America, most of us think of free standing towers when we hear campanile. The tower is called The Campanile due to its resemblance to St Mark's campanile in Venice and is UC Berkeley's most recognizable symbol. The 307 foot tower, completed in 1914, is still one of the tallest bell and clock-towers in the world and has thirteen floors. You can ride the elevator up to the observation deck on the eighth floor.
